WW3 fears' as US forces kill scores
of RUSSIAN fighters TENSIONS between the US and Russia could be
about to rise after US-led coalition troops killed around 100 fighters in Russia, Bloomberg
has reported. It is believed that more than 200 contact
soldiers fighting on behalf of Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad on a base held by US and Kurdish
forces were killed in drone strikes. The incident has been described as the deadliest
clash between the two since the Cold War, The US has been unable to say how many of
the fighters were Russian. Further complications have been raised with
claims that the asset on the base may have been a rogue operation.
US defense secretary Jim Mattis described
the situation as perplexing, but did not provide more details. US colonel Thomas Veale said: Coalition
officials were in regular communication with Russian counterparts before, during and after
the thwarted, unprovoked attack. Russian officials assured coalition officials
they would not engage coalition forces in the vicinity. The Kremlin has also refused to comment on
reports of Russian casualties.
Former Russian diplomat Vladimir Frolov described
the incident as the first major exchange between the two superpowers since the Vietnam War. He said: This is a big scandal and a reason
for an acute international crisis. But Russia will pretend nothing happened..
