NICH: In the eye of the GTA mod storm STEPH: And China dont like your streams!
NICH: This is screenPLAY daily news. [Music intro] NICH: Its Monday the 26th of June, Im Nich.
STEPH: And Im Steph, and heres what we deemed newsworthy. NICH: After a week of uncertainty, it looks like the GTA mod tool OpenIV is back up and running. In response to a statement from Rockstar, OpenIV released an update suggesting they would be continuing development in defiance of a cease and desist letter for Rockstars parent company Take-Two.
But it sounds like Rockstar took mum and dad aside and just kinda went, Hey, maybe dont just rag on our fans and shut down their cool stuff all the time? As a result Rockstar have come out and said, quote: Take-Two has agreed it will generally not take legal action against third-party projects involving Rockstars PC games that are single-player, non-commercial and respect the intellectual property rights of third parties. This does not apply to multiplayer or online services, tools, files, libraries or functions that could be used to impact multiplayer or online services, or use or importation of other IP, including other Rockstar IP, in the project. So looks like all the review bombing worked and OpenIV is back! STEPH: Yeah! So one on hand Im like Yeah! Power to the people! And then...
NICH: Go the people! STEPH: On the other hand, Im a little bit worried because, you know, isnt this a little bit like giving into terrorist demands? NICH: Right, youre worried that what could we now achieve with just negative reviews on Steam? STEPH: Yeah [laughs]
NICH: What else could we do? What kind of power do we now wield with these fingeys? I mean, I guess the part of this is that the, a lot of the mods that were used for the online hacks, theyre gone and theyre staying gone. OpenIV got sort of caught up in this, because there was an aspect to it that may have been used by people to hack online, but its not used for that, thats not why its built.
And so OpenIV kinda just got swept up in this and Take Two kinda knee-jerk pulled the parachute. STEPH: So OpenIV was like an innocent bystander in all this? NICH: Youre really doubling down on this terrorist analogy. STEPH: [laughs] Its just thats what I see in the news every day. This is where my head is at.
NICH: Its collateral damage.
STEPH: It was collateral damage. And now theyve gone okay, maybe we went too far. Hands up, we apologise. NICH: Yeah absolutely.
I mean, its one of those things right where, I know after last week, Take Two was copping a huge amount of flak and that sort of thing, and yeah you can argue that maybe before you just pulled this massive, really popular mod and banned it from using the game, and that sort of thing, maybe figure out whether or not this is the right move to make for your fans and the game, but at the same time when theyre going well, this is something thats affecting the financial side of our game, were trying to protect the users and all that sort of thing like, big companies sometimes they do stuff like this. I think its pretty impressive that theyve turned around after a week and gone Okay fine, were letting it back on. We see that weve done something terribly wrong. As weve now looked at our Steam page.
STEPH: So now I guess everyones happy, except the cheaters! NICH: Yeah, screw you cheaters! All your good stuffs still gone! STEPH: Moving on, China is making a move to ban live streaming on a bunch of major websites. Its certainly not news that the Peoples Republic of China has some pretty strict censorship laws across most of its media formats. To protect national security and maintain social stability, you cant visit sites like Google, YouTube, Facebook, Twitch, even Pinterest is blocked in China. So I dont know how anyone over there manages to find cute and clever pantry storage solutions.
I imagine their pantries are just a chaotic mess over there. NICH: Is that a thing on Pinterest?
STEPH: Oh yeah! You should see my pantry! STEPH: YOU should SEE my pantry!
NICH: No one in China can. STEPH: The ban will hit Chinas Twitter-esque Sina Weibo, news website ifeng.Com and games-driven platform AcFun. Gaming is the biggest area of the market to grow, largely led by video game streaming services like douyu.
It is not yet known when these live-streaming services will be taken down. So the reason for this ban is mainly because these streaming sites have been used to project political opinions. NICH: Dissent!
STEPH: Yeah! And commentary and opinions and stuff like that, so the government feels like they cant control that so theyre just like BAN IT! NICH: Theyre such killjoys! I read an interesting article about this this morning, about how this is just how China works, is that a new social network or a new form of media comes up and then it just booms and it goes huge. The statistics of the amount of people who are livestreaming in China is just astronomical, and then when it gets too big then the government goes Okay we cant control this anymore and then just shuts it down.
STEPH: So is that with the view that a new one is gonna pop up? NICH: Yeah, that something else will come up in
STEPH: Because Twitch is already banned over there, you cant Twitch stream or use YouTube or anything like that, so this was I guess the replacement, it was a localised one that could presumably be more controlled in China.
NICH: Yeah, but its too hard to control - from a government perspective, its too hard to control live-streaming video as opposed to like a text post, where you can search a website for any mention of this word or this person or whatever. Whereas youve got the live-stream video of people saying But like realistically, these game streaming sites, its not like its just political dissent the whole time. Its not just, every game that you click on its actually you know, its a picture of World of Warcraft but you just go in and its just someone dressed giving political manifesto speeches dressed as like an elf. STEPH: Or is it?
NICH: OR IS IT? Because that would be a streaming service I would definitely watch! Tell you what though, bring it here, ban Twitch, ban Twitch chat.
If youre gonna ban anything, get rid of Twitch chat. If you can ban that from here and just have the video, I feel like were probably all good.
STEPH: No if you do that then people would just spam our videos with negative reviews and then wed have to like, you know? NICH: Wed have to give in to terrorist demands.
STEPH: Give into terrorist demands. NICH: Full circle. Alright, in other news.
Gearbox continues to fight to make Battleborn work. After making the entire game free to play just a few weeks back, theyve now dropped a new PvP mode called Supercharge. The 3v3 mode comes with 3 custom maps and its all playable right now for the absolutely correct price of zero dollars. STEPH: Not to be outdone, Titanfall 2 is getting two new maps this week, also free.
From the 27th of June U.S. Time, youll be able to download Live Fire map Traffic, and a reworked version of War Games from Titanfall 1. Along with the maps come with other tweaks including a third weapon slot for pilots and a new execution animation. NICH: And finally, PLAYERUNKNOWNS BATTLEGROUNDS has surpassed 4 million sales on PC.
This puts revenue at US$100 million in just 13 weeks. The game isnt even officially released yet, and it has sold more copies than Breath of the Wild. And a touch of the local eSports news for your Mondays, and Hi-Rez held their mid-year finals in Adelaide. Legacy eSports was crowned the best Smite team in the region after beating LG Dire Wolves in the grand final, taking home the lions share of the $25,000 split-two prize pool.
STEPH: And in Paladins, Kanga eSports was victorious over Kings in the path to Dreamhack grand final. This secured a spot at Dreamhack Valencia in mid-July, where theyll compete against the best Paladins teams in the world. NICH: That is it for todays news! Make sure you check our YouTube channel this afternoon for soonPLAY, so you will know what you will soon be playing! STEPH: You can follow screenPLAY in all of these places, details in [sings] the description below. NICH: [singing] The description below! NICH: Im Nich.
STEPH: Im Steph.
NICH: And well see you every weekday for the rest of your lives. Steph, take us out. Say the bit that I was supposed to say, but you now have to say because I covered for you by singing. STEPH: Ummm, were gonna leave you with this Mario 64 mod which adds a little bit of Odyssey.
NICH: [singing] Details below! STEPH: I love that this is called The Fun Version. NICH: Yeah because Mario 64 famously boring game. [LAUGHTER] NICH: So this is what its going to be like in Odyssey. Just wondering around putting a hat on little things that look like poo.
And uhh, this is pretty much the entire game. NICH: OHHHH He became the platform! Okay thats kinda cool. STEPH: Oh this is like Mario but like, Prey. NICH: Ohhh yeah, you never know where he is! You walk into a room and its like Is this a coffee cup, or is this secretly Mario? STEPH: Well I feel like the hats a bit of a giveaway.
The coffee cup would have a small red hat. NICH: Just a tiny red hat with an M on it. STEPH: Is this breaking your heart a little bit? Because youve spent $4000 on Hearthstone? NICH: I couldve spent two grand if the system was there in the first place. STEPH: I feel like they should give you some kind of little reward.
A little something-something for people whove put in the big bucks. NICH: I feel they should too, but that would mean they would need to give something away for free..
